I believe, after the pilot, they abandoned action-adventure in favor of character/aesop-driven slice-of-pony-life.
But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

Why have none of these been used before? In Fi M, I mean?
Don't quote me on this, but I think Hasbro lost the rights to most of these characters. The only G1 characters to have shown up in G4 so far are Applejack and Spike.
...Of course, that doesn't stop some of us from speculating that Celestia is Megan from the G1 show. ;)

They kinda have. Pinkie Pie's characters owes, perhaps, to that of Surprise; Rarity is a more intelligent Hearthtrob...
Applejack is nothing like Applejack, though. ;)

I don't think all of those villians could work in this show.
For now in Fi M don't have humanoid characters, only charaters close to this are swiching between this and walking on four legs (like dragons or Diamond Dogs).
Adding to humanlike characters wouldn't be good for MLPFIM even if it would be Satan Expy.
But other not humanoid sound fine for FIM. Horever I prefer oryginal bad guys.
And MLPFIM still have dragon, hydra and basilisc like creature.
They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.

I love that Princess Celestia has such a sense of humor.
So why does everyone else still act so stiffly formal around her?
Well, think of it this way - imagine if God/Jesus lived on Earth instead of in Heaven, and he was recognized by everyone as King of the world and regularly interacted with his subjects. Even though he has a sense of humor, I think people still might act formally around him just because he's, you know, God.
