yeah Pinkie really is a YMMV thing, I personally have no issue at all with her being a Looney Tunes at times..as long as she's not used as a Deus ex Machina.

The fleeting moments where Pinkie actually acts semi-reserved (PYHD and MMDW) are by far my favourite moments featuring her.

@Apple: Yeah, the thing is that those aren't they're only traits. AJ is stubborn and RD is competitive, but that's not all they do when the focus isn't on them.

This is pretty much how I feel about it; I don't mind the jokes as long as they don't impede any other aspects of the storytelling.

Also this. I like it when the show treats her as just a normal pony who gets overexcited and overenthusiastic really easily.

@JT It's really more a problem with Pinkie's character type than how she's actually written. Everyone seems to agree that Pinkie's character is at her best when she is shown to be vulnerable, distressed, or otherwise not happy and silly all the time. The problem is, though, that you simply can't do that to her when she's not the focus of the episode, so your options for her in those situations are to either have her crack jokes on the side (which is exactly what she would do in most any situation), have something distress her directly (only PYHD has done this, to my knowledge) or not have her be involved at all.

Poison Joke as first art in today Drawfriend.

For some reason, when I write fanfiction I have no trouble using Pinkie as an accessory without just having her just be a Looney Tune.

(I was always more of a Disney and Fleischer fan myself)

The sad thing about CEQ is that the OC character of Lockwood already acts SO MUCH BETTER as comic relief than Pinkie does for this type of story.

Again, though, the rematch was a lot better than Pinkie's first fight (even if it did still anger me enough to make me chip my tooth slightly)

@Moe it was the tone of her voice. She didn't sound as... zany.

She sounded quieter... calmer... warmer.

that and she was being quietly angry for a long part of the ep.

@Ginger mind if I ask why you think he (Lockwood) is better in that regard?

@Dev For pretty much the same reasons Fluttershy mentioned. Lockwood knows that there's a time and a place to be funny and a time and a place to be serious. He isn't silly and he doesn't perform shtick, he just makes some light-hearted jests (sometimes even at his own expense) here and there to try and help boost morale or diffuse tension

@Perpetual: I think the problem is just that: there's no middle ground for the character. She's either a joke, or she has to have a lot of focus. I think there needs to be a way to keep her as a motivated character even when she isn't the focus of an episode. I think that's a big part of the problem: when she isn't in focus, she usually doesn't have any motivation other than "for the lulz".

Except for PYHD. That was sort of a good middle ground for Pinkie.
