Luna returns from a wilderness retreat meditation thingy which she has been on for most of last season. Finding Canterlot under the control of Discord, she goes to Ponyville. After meeting Spike and/or other ponies, cue Big Damn Heroes moment
"Big sister, I'm home! I had a wonderful time, I feel so relaxed. You really should give it a try some... time... OH WHAT THE HELL IS THIS!? I spend a thousand years weaving a spell to get out of the moon and he doesn't make a peep, but I try to take some time off, and Discord just goes to town!?"

Yeah, I like the idea that Luna is nocturnal, but you'd think SOMEONE would try to wake her up with all this shit going. Maybe Luna's not a morning (ahem evening) person, and Celestia is afraid of disturbing her?

Stealing the jewelry means squat. In order to get the Elements back, the Ponies have to rediscover their personal strenghts and reforge their friendship.
Though that might be too redundant with S1E2.
