Problem is, if we make villains who are foils to the main cast, they may end up feeling like rehashes of their Discorded selves.
Then again, the Flim Flam Brothers were rather like foils to Applejack already: they clearly did not give a flying feather about conducting themselves with honor.

I really want to know what the heck was causing those explosions in canterlot. You don't see any changelings besides the queen using magic on screen but the laser beams nailing canterlot imply that SOMETHING is using powerful magic.

I think Changelings don't take on abilities of the thing they are copying. Otherwise the queen could imitate celestia and wreak havok.
