Hello there? Mind if I drop in to talk about the finale Two-Parter?
So I rewatched the Finale and I must say, my opinion of it was rather mixed. While all of the good stuff was there, I did feel that the plot was clunky and rushed. Most of it was the rather poor execution of Shining Armor and Princess Candence.
Right from the get-go we are told that
not only is Shining Armor is Twilight's Big Brother, he was her closest friend as a foal. This was given NO foreshadowing whatsoever in the previous episodes. Granted, I don't think the writers were thinking this far ahead when "Cutie Mark Chronicles" was written, but there shouldhave been SOME foreshadowing in some of the season two episodes. Candence doesn't fare any better as she was Twilight's foalsitter and the two seemed to share a close bond with eachother in the flashbacks. It's really feels like someone took the concept of
Clone!Ponce de Leon and played it seriously sans the dying part.
Another problem I had was that the other members of the Mane Six were pretty much
Demoted to Extra during the two parter. I know where they wanted to keep the Drama, but the way they handled the others in this episode(s) was really sketchy. And at some places, they felt OOC. I think the example of this that hit me the most was Applejack's rather non-chalant reaction to
Changling!Candence scoffing her hous de vours. Applejack has always been a proud pony, she shows visible vermhent when Prince Blueblood scoffs her apple treats in "Best Night Ever" and vows to outdo the fancy alternatives. Here, she seems to take it with uncharacteristic stride, and this is
considering that she was the royal caterer.
I had a few problems with the
Canterlot Mines escape, but I can't fault it for that from a storytelling perspective because that kind of escapeis rather prelevant in media. I know it's a nitpick, but it still irks me that the good royals are
princesses while the focus bad guy is a
queen, but again. That's more of a media problem than anything else.
Again, I can see the makings of a real good movie in this. The plot was interesting enough to keep me engaged. Although rather poorly presented, both Shining Armor and Candence were nice characters and I adored the Changling Queen. It's something about that Malificent esque design that really makes her stand out.
I could see this as a really good
movie. Probably as good as Disney's classical Princess tales, it really was handicapped by the dreaded 30-minute airtime slot. Candence's Lament was really good.
Strong Pokemon, Weak Pokemon. That is an overused quote.
