"nope The opnening said that they used their unicorn magic not tha they were unicorns. As you know only unicorns can use magic directly.Hence the reason...

Word Of God is that alicorns embody the three races "

One fateful day, the younger unicorn refused to lower the moon to make way for the dawn.

Episode here as well. 43 seconds in.

Maybe some ponies just have double names.

[up][up] I was talking about this "the eldest used her unicorn powers to raise the sun at dawn".

Yeah I admitt that you could be right. I might have misread it

The Apple family kinda ruin the idea of Belle being Rarity's last name. I think ponies don't actually have surnames like we do. Pinkie Pie might actually be the only one in her family to have "Pie" in her name.

It you think about it, a lot of horses in real life are given Awesome McCool Names. Man O'War, Secretariat, Seabiscuit, etc. My sister once owned a horse who's full name was Judy Jack Prince, who's nephew was Daredevil. No surnames, just cool names for Cool Horses. Why not the same for magical ponies of friendship?

You know, "Sweetie Belle" might just be a two-word single name. Or a double first name, and nobody uses their family names.

I'm more likely to believe the first case.
But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

Regarding Pinkie, wasn't her grandmother named Pie aswell?

I had always assumed "Sweetie Belle" was a single name, like "Mary Jane" or "Pepper Ann".
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

But then, "Pinkie Pie" tended to sound like a single name in the past...

Rainbow seems to use her full name a lot.

and it's certainly not impossible to have two first names, as well. I think that the rules may just vary from family to family. There was a time when having a family name was a rare thing, after all, so some family's having a surname and others not makes sense. It explains how you can get couple like Mr. and Mrs. Cake working in a bakery - they both worked with sweets, so they decided to take the name. Like Farmer, or Smith.

There are known cases of family names being used - Mr. and Mrs. Cake, Granny Pie, etc. As for the Apple family, I'm inclined to believe they're from a culture that places the family name first - so Big Mac's proper name would be "Apple Big Macintosh", and Granny Smith is actually "Apple Smith".

...who names their daughter Smith though?

Is Big Macintosh his ACTUAL name? it's not just some term of endearment used by AJ and AB?

...that's a much harder question to answer than it should be. I want to say "yeah I don't know why I treated it like his actual name was Big Macintosh" since prepending "Big" to someone's name is not uncommon, but... it's MLP. There are names that sound weirder than "Big Macintosh" as actual names.

It could be a term of endearment, it could be his actual name. We have no evidence either way.

Yeah, on the other hand, nobody calls Big O just plain "O".

Does anyone else refer to him by name who isn't from the Apple family?

^Very few people who aren't in the Apple clan reference him at all, let alone by name.

It's also quite possible that some families don't use any family names at all. There don't appear to be any set rules to it.

In Winter Wrap Up, the mayor mentions being late for winter. Do you think that deadline is set in stone by Celestia? Is being late a punishable offence, or is it a matter of pride for the town to be on time?

^It's probably a point of pride. Celestia doesn't strike me as the type to punish anyone for something like that, especially if it's always a problem.

^^The girdle bet he made with Applejack, I imagine.

[up][up]I'd like to think that. It would certainly make the deadline more justifiable. And we not dare cross Celestia's path if she ever DOES punish anypony!

The people of Equestria don't have much faith in Celestia do they? It's not just Twilight, EVERYONE seems to think that Celestia deals out horrific punishments on a whim (RD seems to think that she'll banish someone just for doing a shit performance at a competition), and they seem incredibly nervous around her even though she's constantly making it clear that it's ok to lighten up around her.
