Well, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who has problems with horror movies. Where I'm from there's this sort of general air like you're not allowed not to like horror movies. It always seemed stupid to me. But then again I've always liked animated movies, which, well, don't fly so well in highschool.

... I have got to stop using high school as a measuring stick for normalcy.

Anyways, all that said, I actually really enjoy psychological horror. Just not the Torture Porn, everyone dies crap.

Sad Luna pagetopper!

[down]Eh, there were only like two or three real jump scares. the rest you could all see coming, and had the musical buildup and stuff. Unless I'm misusing the term jump scare - I take it as basically something happens with no warning, right? Not even a musical cue?

I'd reccomend Cabin in the Woods to anyone who has at least a passing familiarity with Horror Clichés. It's mostly all jump scares anyway.

And I am TERRIFIED of horror movies.

Interesting, Kegi, my general impression of being among geeks is that you like Horror Movies and if you don't like them then you probably don't exist because that's supposedly impossible. Actually I think I wrote a thing about it once.
I analyze "Geek Culture" here.

I only dabble in horror. It's really not my cup of tea. Too many Jump Scares or Faux Symbolism.

Keg: well, I am uber sensitive to jump scares, so even the eagle thing scared me a tad. But even then, I loved the movie, so I'm reccomending it to anyone who is in a similar predicament to myself.

See it's not necessarily nerds... It was my class in high school. Pretty much every guy in my class all went about, bragging about how much they liked horror movies, and while it never came to it there was always the unspoken implication of "...and if you don't you're a sissy pussy".

I once had a class where the teacher asked us our favourite movies as a sort of quick way of getting to know us all - you know, the standard 'tell me a bit about yourself' song and dance. It went all the way around the room with action, and horror movies, and then it came to me.

"...The Secret of NIMH"

[up]Really? Well fair enough, it surprised me a bit too. The foreshadowing was nice to Curt's death, though. That was one of the funniest parts of the movie, but would have scared the piss out of me without any warning.

But yeah, I totally agree. It's definitely a movie worth seeing.

I only partly liked The Secret Of NIMH. The problem was I read the book first which made the movie look bad.

OH GOD THAT SCENE. I realized what was going to happen about ten seconds before it happened. The guy next to me, had completely forgotten, so naturally when it happened "OH DEAR MOTHER OF GOD" was uttered, and it was actually more impressive than scary, by that point.

@Steve: Really? I read the book first too - I first saw the movie after reading the book in class - and I still really enjoyed it. But I enjoyed it as a separate entity, because the plots sort of diverged after a certain point.

Plus I just absolutely love Don Bluth's animation and imagery. It's such a wonderfully morose atmosphere. I've since seen things that have overtaken it, but it's still easily among my top movies.

[up]I probably would have forgotten if my friend hadn't pointed it out. But the only scenes that got a shout out of me were Holden's death, and Pa zombie getting the hero on the docks.

Yeah, the book was definitely better. The movie was good, but I did prefer how the book told the story.

I'm not into horror myself. Granted, I haven't seen many horror movies. My list of watched horror is one of the Final Destination movies and Saw 5. Those are probably not the best representatives of the horror genre. While they did creep me out, they never really scared me.

All this talk of movies and Don Bluth makes me want to go watch Titan A.E. again.

Ooooh, Titan AE was a great movie.

It was nice to see him doing actual good movies again. The 90's sucked just bit hardcore for Bluth.

Titan was a great movie that was poorly marketed.

I wonder if I still have the vcd somewhere.

Titan A.E.? God, I haven't seen that film since it was released... I can barely remember it at all...

I do remember enjoying it though.

I saw Titan AE. Pretty good movie. Last I checked, Titan AE had a score ~55% on Rotten Tomatoes. Surprisingly low if you ask me.

Titan AE was pretty fun. Not my favorite movie by Bluth, but still entertaining.

I'm surprised so many people feel that there is this overwhelming pressure that you are supposed to like horror movies if you are a nerd. I'm actually one of a few people I know who enjoys horror movies. And yes, Mousa while there is plenty of faux symbolism in a lot of horror today, it was slightly less prevalent in the Silent era and up to the '50's if you were willing to avoid the exploitation films. Even if you aren't big on horror, I'd recommend you track down the original Cat People from 1942.

Actually, ignore that last bit if you prefer, Mousa, I realised I'm pushing you to do something you might prefer not to do. That's a bit of a dick move on my part.

On the topic of Don Bluth, there's also Land Before Time.

I seem to be one of the few who liked the sequels, though I know Bluth didn't work on them, and there's a completely different atmosphere. But that may be the Nostalgia Filter talking...

Maybe that's because the original was a bit dark for me when I originally watched it.

[up]I didn't know the pressure existed.tongue

I think it suffered from some pretty seriously mismarketing, if I recall? That might have something to do with it. I mean it had it's flaws, but it was still a really good movie.

[up]I barely even remember the original... I should try watching it again. What I do remember of it, though, is basically the epitome of 7-year-old terror. Seriously. Same deal with the original American Tail, and All Dogs Go To Heaven.

Land Before Time? The first film is the only film I've watched that has the honour of making me cry. Mind you, I couldn't have been more that 7-8 years old at the time...

Definitely a classic though.

Can someone explain to me the connection between horror films and nerds? I've never heard of this connection until now.

Also, Land Before Time. I loved those movies (well, I only remember 1, 2, 3, and 5, but still).
