With real horse herds there tend to be a lot of females and one or two males ... maybe pony society is modeled after that and thats why there are so many lady ponies and not so many male ponies.

Asexuality (or at least if you just count the people who admit asexuality) are pretty rare after all. Either you have incredible odds working against you, or they were big meanie-pants.

My idea is that the animators were just lazy and/or in a big time crunch and had to use pre-made ponies. Since they already had the pony model from the Mane 6, it's a lot easier to use those characters with slightly different hair and colors.

Well, in Star Swirl's case, I see her as capable of being attracted to other mares (like, her idolising of Twilight borders on attraction) but she'd never persue such a relationship as she considers having a foal to be part of her duties to her ancestors. Admittedly not the most healthy attitude in the world, but she's got bigger issues to deal with.

EDIT: As a biologist myself, I can unfortunately say that the most likely reason for such a gender descrepency in mammals is that most males don't survive till adulthood.

I'm trying to decide whether it's the eyes or the smirk that make Celestia most devious in that shot. I know it's a combination of the two, but I'd like to identify which lends the most devious impression. I think the smirk lends the most.
