I'm just playing along. Still interested in pony technology.
Pony technology in my opinion is what happens when you don't have a world war to jumpstart technological advancements. They seem to be set at somewhere between late 1800s and early 1900s America.
I keep forgetting that alcohol and nicotine are technically drugs, too. Yeah, if you put it that way, I can see that. Although I'm not sure about the cigars bit. Applejack smoking wouldn't be out of the question, but she would probably go for cheap cigarettes before the whole "keep a scented humidor, such-and-such exported cigar is 50$ but is GREAT, etc" schtick.

One plausible reason as to the need for the ponies to regulate Equestrian meteorology is because Discord warped the world so badly the climate was wrecked badly. Everfree has recovered, but the wildlife still feels the aftereffects, which explains the megafauna.
Pinkie's first party resulted in her discovering how to tame the parasprites with music.
