I Imagined it as an orb of magic that can be manipulated, contained within a casing that restricts the manipulations in a very specific way (the buttons, joystick) the orb ia viewable through the glass sheet

but I'm gonna stop now, because I don't know the first fucking thing about electronics and crap like that, and these discussions always make me feel stupid

I was thinking more a magic mirror hooked up to an arcade stick in a wooden frame. Only thing is making sure you can squeeze the whole arcade game into the memory-space of the magic mirror (well, you should be able to get more space if you delete the scrying software, lol).

As for Equestria video games, I wonder how advanced the games are. Are they modern? 16-bit? Even more advanced than ours? Magic would surely help with component limitations, so they could probably progress alot faster that ours.

I highly doubt they have advanced types of video games. Those arcade machines strck me as relatively new and those only appeared to be playing 70's style games.

Although, given the prevelance of convincing magical illusions in this world, they might be able to create some VR type stuff somewhere down the line

@Dalek: I suspect they remember the last Dark Lord to attack pre-Equestrian Old Dream Valley.

I wonder why Equestria tech is so behind ours. Since the lack of need for many components in tech due to magical replacements, and having the ideal powersource of magic (the only limitation I can think of is needing a magic battery of some kind), by all rights, they should progress alot faster than us, at least in early in the tech tree. Yet we know that Equestria has been around for at least 1000 years, probably more. I guess magic means you just don't need to progress much tech wise, so there is little drive for it outside of leisure. Especially since one of the main starting point of tech for us, agriculture, is almost completely covered by EP magic.

Someone mentioned that general Equestrian tech is pre-Industrial Revolution, with hints of our modern stuff shining through. They certainly know enough to make powerful telescopes (and thus SLR-class cameras like the ones Photo Finish uses!) and train engine-sized food processors, but they have no radio/television/Internet, still being dependant on Dragon-fax, couriers (literal pony express ), broadsheet/tabloid newspapers, and telegrams.

They certainly have access to glass and rubber and ceramics and at least some form of metallurgy too. I wonder what kind of leather (or Pleather) they use. Given the hazmat suits, they may well have some knowledge of plastics as well.

They don't have much of our war-born technology. I haven't seen gunpowder, rifling (in Pinkie's Party Cannon), Radar (a prereq for TV, although they know about magnetrons and thus have microwaves!), advanced armor (Their camo gear has no ballistic/flak jacket and the armor we see is all platemail, maybe they have magic armor?).
