She could have started out using illusion spells to hide, but as her power grew she might have transitioned to using the Illusions as bait for traps or to confuse and distract in order to give her offensive spells the advantage they need to take down a dragon. She may have progressed in power to the point where she no longer needs such trickery, but that doesnt mean she's forgotten how to use them.

Her talent is surviving. In a life or death situation, she's REALLY good at learning what's necessary for her survival

Wow, I actually won my Starcraft 2 game. Of course, since the guy I was playing with was amazingly bad, I have nothing to be proud of.

@Ginger: I'd just stick with the hood then, make her magic be combat based. I wonder how the regular Equestrians would react to magic created specifically as a weapon?

@Sky Doesn't quite work like that. The two don't even meet until halfway through... before then it's the OC tricking the rest of the mane cast and getting annoyed by them

As to your Mary Sue worries...don't be, there's no way to just checklist a Mary Sue, look at Through The Eyes Of Another Pony the main character in that would overload any Mary Sue detector brought within 100 miles of him just looking at it on paper, but he never comes across as one in the story becuase the writing is just so good it makes it complelty beleivable, and makes you care about him so much.
