^^Smoking tends not to be good for your throat, I guess?
Another part of it may be the fact that smoking looks cool superficially, but you're basically inhaling poison while you do it. Doing something like that for the sake of appearing cool is well within Gilda's characterization, I'd say - it's self-destructive, but she has a reputation to keep up, sort of thing.

I agree that 'ugliest pony' polls are pretty useless. They're all Generic Cute to begin with, so unless we're talking in-universe, it doesn't really matter.

I sort of want to do a cover of the fansong "I Will Rise", but slightly rewritten to "She Will Rise".
The problem being I have no talent with any instrument whatsoever, nor access to equipment and software to assist me, so I'm going to have to either get the artist's permission to use the music ripped straight from the video, or do it a capella. The latter appeals to me, I've always liked vocal music. I'm also tempted to rewrite it into Latin, and then do a vocal medley using it and "Vale Decim".

I could definitely see that being true.
In-universe at least, I get the feeling that Rarity is supposed to be the "beautiful" one. Problem is that other than that, there's literally nothing to go on.

Well, there is a bit to go on for Fluttershy. Rarity seemed really insistent on having Fluttershy model for her in her demo for a very important fashion celebrity. So there's at least some level of charm/beauty that Rarity sees in her that she doesn't see in anypony else.

^Someone pointed out not long ago that the mannequins in Rarity's shop are proportioned closer to Celestia (not Luna, who's rather young still) than to your average pony, implying that she's Equestria's unreasonable standard for beauty.

Now I can imagine the ponies of Equestria doing all manner of insane stuff to their bodies, just to look a bit more like Celestia.
The same way some people in Japan go to unreasonable lengths, just to make themselves look like an anime character (like what they do with their eyes)
