So I got an amusing short story to tell. I was playing on a pony server in Team Fortress 2 earlier today and someone commented on my username, Orion Aurora, saying "Oh, Orion Aurora I get the reference."

Me: "Huh?"
Player: "Orion and Aurora, I get it."
Me: "Well I'm glad someone gets it because I certainly don't."
Player: "Oh, well the names come from the two ponies that died in Rainbow Factory"
Me: "Well, I learn something new everyday."

Really, I picked that named because I wanted to reflect my love for astronomy. So yeah, after learning about this I checked Rainbow Factory. Um, wow. I don't know how to use spoiler tags so I'll just say this; Rainbowdash, you scary.

Hi everyone. I never really read more than the current page, so what're we discussing?

@ginger The first name/last name system seems to work differently there. Since Sweetie Belle's name is, well, Sweetie Belle, Rarity's name should be Rarity Belle. But maybe Belle is just her middle name, like Mary Margaret.

I think it really depends. Each pony family seems to have different naming conventions.

^I would definitely say so. 'Sparkle' is definitely Twilight's surname (Ms Sparkle), but Rarity has never introduced herself as 'Rarity Belle' and everyone refers to Sweetie Belle by her full name, including her sister (which would be strange if 'Belle' was a surname). Likewise, Pinkie calling Dash 'Dashie', while not conclusive, suggests that 'Dash' isn't a surname.

It's been stated by one of the people working on the show that they don't really have proper surnames. Some families have a moniker, but that doesn't make AJ Applejack Apple, it more makes her Applejack of the Apple Family. I think each family can sort of decide how they want to do it, so some families will probably have certain naming conventions(Pinkie's Grammy Pie implies that all members of the family may have Pie in their name, and Twilight's mothers name is allegedly Twilight Velvet so Twilight may be a common 'first' name for their family), and others will just plain old have no family names at all.

That's what I've managed to glean, at least.
