As far as the seasons go, I think they're both about the same quality-wise. Season 2 is way more ambitious in the stuff they try to cover; Season one was safer and didn't take as many risks.

Here's my "very brief" breakdown of season 2:

Good:

Vastly improved animation
More variety in setting and plot
More world building
The CMC are used a lot better

Not Good:

Not nearly as much ensemble action; I don't mind the episodes that are more focused on individuals, but I think they went too far in that direction at the expense of group dynamics.

Could go either way:

Enhanced focus on side characters. While it's nice to see the CMC, Cheerilee, Big Mac, Granny Smith, etc. get some more screen time, I think they overdid it to the point of excluding the main cast on occasion.

@Whathisgame: Dang, now I feel like I should start practicing piano again. I'll never be able to do that, but I was pretty good.

Awww... Oh well. I wanna see how the episode plays out. All of the girls look really cool too. Oh, and hello everyone. ^^

The clip looks really cool. The weirdo pegasus makes a strong appearance I see... Also, I'm thinking that the episode will be a combination of Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash. Maybe the people with Shipping Goggles will have fun with it ^^

They try to get all creative and people are gettin' mad? What's wrong with shorts? Trying something new isn't exactly a horrible thing and it's not some sort of representation of a trend of shorter cartoons.

Oh man, that clip was great.

They actually went out of their way to create new background ponies and give them names and lines for this. Thunder Lane (I think that's his name) is pretty cool. Also, there's that grotesquely buff pegasus again. I'm getting a Ren and Stimpy vibe from him, but in a good way. Derpy also continues to exist, so there's a plus.
