Oh boy, anime. A topic I literally know nothing about.

Anyway, Legend of Korra is premiering on April 14th, a lot earlier than I thought. Should I try and rewatch the original Avatar series before then?

And a pagetopper too!

Guys, I think that you should accept that this is one Ginger's not going to care for.

[up]Your decision, would you have the time to finish it all in that time, Sky?

@Sky Thats why the recap pages exist... (But if you want to rewatch, go ahead)

I didn't know it was coming this quickly. I'll have to watch it!

@red I thought it would be coming out in September or something, but I guess that's not how Nickolodeon rolls. I just hope this doesn't get overshadowed by live actions shows like iCarly or Victorious.

@crow I know what happens in the series, I was thinking about rewatching the series just to enjoy it again.

@drenius Depends on how I watch it. I could find it online, but that might not have the greatest quality. If I try to watch it on TV, I have no control over what episodes air when.

@drenius But I WANT to care about it... because I won't be able to live with myself if I don't.

You have no idea... my film lecturers have made me feel so STUPID. They've drilled it into my head that it's wrong to dislike something that's cerebral or meaning driven

If we are talking movies/tv shows as the media. I think I prefer a balance of meaning and entertainment. Shows that are SFX fests yet have a lousy story dont really entertain me that much.

Other types of media I can look past meaning. Some video games are fun to play despite having a terrible or no storyline whatsoever.

Just to throw my opinion in this discussion, I watch TV/movies purely for entertainment. If I wanted something meaningful, I would've read a book.

What the hell are people trying to convince Ginger of now?

[up]I personally think that is kind of an arrogant to assume that certain media can only do certain things, but it is your opinion.

@sky Do it if you want to, the main ones I've watched recently are Book 3, and I hadn't seen half of them before the finale...

I'm not too sure about my tastes in entertainment

Books arent always more meanigful than shows though... Ive read quite a few for book reviews that have been absolute garbage. You cant always judge media by its format.

@Emi That's just my opinion though. I haven't heard of anyone watching a movie for a message, but I'm sure it happens.

The talk about Madoka Magica made me wonder something about the My Little Pony series. Would they have fantasy stories? Their world has a lot of the trappings and tropes of fantasy stories in our own world, but I'm sure there would be things that would be considered unrealistically magical even for Equestria. There was a hint in the G1 series that they had fantasy stories of some sort (it was in the beginning of "The Revolt of Paradise Estate") but I'm not sure about G4. I know they have adventure novels, but what about fantasy? Or would those just be stories about "magic" and be fiction but not necessarily about things that would be considered impossible in that world?

As to what Madoka Magica is, it's very much a Darker and Edgier Magical Girl genre story. And Ginger, I don't blame you for not liking it, I generally LOVE anything Magical Girl but I hated that one, mainly because I thought it was too depressing to be entertaining and also because the fans who called a "realistic deconstruction" made it sound like there was something wrong with liking more idealistic stories like Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure. I doubt they intended it that way, but when they compared magical girls to real-life Child Soldiers, that's where they hit my Berserk Button. But that's off-topic, if you want to argue with me about magical girls having lives that are as bad as real-life Child Soldiers, do it through P Ms because I'm afraid my ranting would ruin this thread.

@ Ginger....that's bullshit, if you dont like something, you don't like it, doen'st matter if it's cerebral or meaningful, if it's a bad story overall, it's still a bad story. Now yes hating something JUST becuase it requires some thinking, sure that's a bit wrong, but doesn't mean just becuase something requires a bit of thiking, it'll be a good story and you'll like it.

wish I could remember what video SF Debris epic rant about that topic was in.

The Madoka Magica discussion is boring, offtopic, and apparently inflamatory. Can we talk about something else please?

I agree. A book can be entertaining and a TV show can be deep.

Madoka is definitely that kind of TV show. I goes further than just deconstructing its genre. But there's more too it than just the message, true.
