From what they've done in past episodes, I could easily see Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie as dueling investigators, where Twilight is only trying to come up with a logical sequence for everything that happened, while Pinkie keeps fixating on oddball details, and it's not until they put their heads together that they solve the mystery. But I also like the idea of Applejack and/or Spike playing "Watson".

And then Rainbow Dash announces, "It was RED HERRING!"
