RD IS nice, and I'll never understand how people can dislike her as much as they do

wild mass guess I posit that Dashie's abrasiveness stems from being bullied herself, causing her to develop a fiery personality and hit back, so to speak. She also dislikes seeing others being bullied, so naturally despite being teased herself, she'd white-knight for other bully victims. Like Fluttershy.

The dynamic here forms where Fluttershy begins reciprocrating for Dashie. I might be mistaken, but Fluttershy may have said that she might have accidentally Stared somepony before - perhaps she reached breaking point and Penance Stared a bully who got too abusive?

Perhaps Dashie saw Fluttershy in a different light after that, only because they have at least some kind of bond, even as acquaintences perhaps, she realises that there is more to Flutters than a hopeless bundle of nerves. wild mass guess

And that's how a Friendship was made!

Also Dashie's niceness is quite subtle and understated next to her loud and brash awesomeness, like her little girlish squeeing and excited wingflapping and legwiggling when reading Daring Do and the Griffon's Goblet :3

[up][up] Dash is definitely within Jerk with a Heart of Gold territory, I think it more stems from the fact that her abrasiveness so often leads to her becoming an obnoxious loser more recurringly than the other characters. She does seem to have less moments of clarity than the others, even Pinkie Pie and Rarity, and seems to be the one getting the most Aesops hit hard on her this season.

I joined the fandom somewhere around when 'A Dog and Pony Show' was out. I heard about this pony thing on another site, and came over to see if there was a thread on TV Tropes. I briefly resisted a little bit longer, but got into it fully not long after.

And that's how my life fell apart.

I always roll my eyes at people who dislike Jerks who have hearts of gold.

Doesn't all the times they act like a jerk make those moments when they ARE genuinely nice all the more meaningful? sad

Sometimes, or it just means they had a moment of weakness and it says nothing about their true selves.

[up][up]Yes, she is loveable, as said though it may be because she is less versatile than others in execution, who can more evenly be the voice of reason or the Idiot Ball holder. Maybe this is why some consider Applejack, who in comparison is more often the sane man of the cast, to be the blandest of the mane six.

As said this is why I like The Last Roundup, Applejack for once is the one having a flawed moment, and it is actually Rainbow Dash who is most vocal about trying to coax her out of it, both in their own unique way of course. It shows versatility and complexity when the two can play opposite of their more common roles.

Depends. In my case, it mostly depends on why they're being a mean meanie-pants (when they're being a mean meanie-pants). If there's a reason (a Freudian Excuse, perhaps), I'm inclined to be forgiving.

AJ is busy, mind, most of the time she doesn't have much to contribute to an episode because she has a legit fulltime job helping Big Mac with Sweet Apple Acres.

@Ginger: Or makes there moments of niceness seem less sincere. Not quite what I think but I'm sure others do.

Or as Mousa put it. There are plenty of jerks who are just jerks and that's all.

@Psi 001: I think the real crux of people's reaction to RD has to do with the other character's personalities, and the setting she is in. If she were in a different show she would probably be considered nicer.

I think her function in the episode may come down to who writes it. If this is an M.A Larson episode I think we might actually get some support for FS from RD. Anyone else it's up in the air, leaning towards not likely.

It may not help that her sister Apple Bloom, who is basically a more childish and boisterous version of Applejack, is getting some extra spotlight now.

@Mio: Admitedly Rainbow's treatment reminds of that of Sonic in the different cartoons. Though he does change from incarnation to incarnation, his basic ethics and traits are the same but are treated with a more negative and positive weight depending on which media. In Sonic X and Ao Sth he's basically The Ace, but in Sat Am and Archie he has Straight Men reminding him how reckless he is and more realistic consequences to his abrasiveness (there are admitedly times I think they overdo it even here however, especially since the more responsible character is often a Creator's Pet).

As for Rainbow Dash, I admit these are nit picks anyway, as long as they don't Flanderize her into a COMPLETE Jerk Ass I won't be too irritated.

Oh, yes please! This is pretty much the reason I love this character pair. (And it makes me at least appreciate Rainbow Dash a little better.)

You fucking people.

Maybe I'm just a bad person then. RD's personality has NEVER bothered me. EVER!! and I've NEVER seen her as ANYTHING but a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.

Then again... I love House.

Her overpoweredness is the only thing that's ever grated me about her

As said I like Rainbow Dash, I'm just saying I'd like her to be a bit more versatile, and even then it's an excess detail, since I'm a perfectionist. Should the show get Flanderized and Dash turn into the next Peter Griffin or Mr Krabs, THEN you'll see me complain.

You didn't like her overpoweredness? Hmm, considering the recurring opinion of Twilight's powers, how do you feel about her?

But that's just it... I physically can't comprehend how people can dislike her.

If I can understand the problem then I can accept it while still not agreeing

Ginger you are fine.

If nothing else you are probably better able to see the good in someone (fictional or otherwise) then I am, I say that is a good thing.

Anyway I have work to do. I'll see you all later.
