Yes, I level ground to the point where my butterfree could beat the Elite Four single wingedly. There is nothing a determined 9 year old can't do through more power leveling.

Butterfree are awesome and friendlier than Beautifly, which is a predatorial vampiric butterfly pokemon that drinks the blood of its foes.

Butterfree got a huge upgrade from gen3 onwards when the ability compoundeyes was gifted onto it. Accuracy bonus means your status powders hardly ever miss :D
I barely ever bothered with the powders. I mostly powered through everything with Psybeam, and sometimes Mimic. Of course, psychic was way OP in gen1, but there was no STAB and Butterfree had terrible stats.

According to Bulbapedia, Butterfree didn't learn any STAB moves at all in Gen1. It sounds like things have changed a lot in the later games.

I like status effects. They can't hurt you when they're napping. Or less reliably, when they're paralysis-locked.
Incidentally, I like that Dratini/Dragonair has Shed Skin. Status effect? What status effect? (Currentlly playing Leaf Green... on an emulator.)
