I am seriously getting tired of Dash's detractors using MTBPW as proof of her "jerkishness". Heaven forbid the most athletic, competitive pony use an athletic competition to determine what kind of animal suits her the best. -_-
Shamelessly plugging my comics, Oh yes.

My problem is less with the way she did that in "Best Pet" and more the way she let all the fame go to her head in "Mare Do Well". I mean, I get that she probably has some sort of inferiority complex that she keeps hidden from everyone else, but basking in fame like that isn't appropriate in any circumstance.

I just don't like people who consider themselves awesome. It makes me think they have a huge ego, and lack self awareness.

Everypony was being complete jerks in Mare Do Well except Pinkie and maybe Fluttershy.

I don't think so. I think that what they did was perfectly warranted, and most of the time that Mare Do Well had to step in it was Rainbow's fault for trying to ham it up and make it more impressive.

@Superior Serperior Technically, Rarity did nothing but make the costume.

If one is truly awesome, you should not have to tell people about how awesome you are. You should let your skills speak for yourself.

I don't even like it when people joke about how awesome they are, so maybe that's just a pet peeve of mine, since I am constantly negatively judging myself, to the other bad end of the spectrum.

The only thing that bugged me about Best Pet was how dangerous the canyon run was. And really it only bugged me after the giant eels appeared (since all the other obstacles could be taken as carefully as each competitor pleased without fear of being nommed). As for the rest of the tests, Dashie was clear about what she was looking for and each competitor had the option to drop out at any time, so I have no qualms about her being a hard ass there.

I'm talking about the scene in which everypony was complimenting themselves in front of Dash.

Then again I haven't watched the episode since it aired and whenever I do marathon runs I either sleep or use the bathroom or read something through that episode.

Dashie has yet to learn that though, AHR. Give her time, she'll find that one out eventually.

Kuroi: I was fine with the pet episode. As the dress episode. If RD wants awesome things, or desires to look awesome, or be awesome, that makes sense. It's when she describes herself as awesome or sees herself as awesome that I get aggravated.

Ace: Somehow I doubt that. This show isn't exactly character development central. More of character exploration central. Plus, her cockiness is part of her personality. I doubt they will change something like that.

EVERYPONY was in the wrong in that episode. Maybe if the moral was that two wrongs don't make a right it might have worked but there are better ways of getting across that moral.

I'm actually glad I missed all that dash hate earlier. My opinions on the subject might not endear me to others. tongue

That's more like it. Practical clothing etc.

@AHR So, if anyone has high self-esteem, they are wrong and aren't allowed to feel good about themselves? Besides, it has been shown that Dash's bravado is a front to cover for her own insecurities.
Mr AHR avatar
#109822 from ಠ_ಠ
...I never said that. Stop putting words in my mouth. There is a difference between high self esteem / general confidence in one's abilities and the belief that they are amazing/awesome. There are extremes to any spectrum, and I feel Dash covers that extreme, and is thus a major flaw.

Especially when you get to things like the Dunning-Kruger effect, and what else have you, it just comes across as more baffling.

Librarian: Yea, Dashie's near catastrophes are what really bugged me about that episode. I can kind of put aside Ponyville mutating into some sort of strange danger trap as a necessity of the theme. I was even okay with Dashie getting a little egotistical (it's in character and she wasn't hurting anyone). What I didn't like is where it got to the point where her negligence was putting other ponies in danger. I'd say she's lucky she had her friends to bail her out whenever a situation went bad like that, but I also feel like the writer played her ego too hard. So I guess you could say my annoyance ratio is 50/50 for Dashie and the writer respectively.
