Well, Spike was probably named by Twilight (as a filly, at that), so we don't know what constitutes a real 'dragon' name. These are creatures that live for potentially thousands of years, and eat beauty (sorta). Offhand, I'd say they probably would give themselves or other big, fancy names.

Of course I've heard of Tyrant Celestia, and it would be perfectly in-character for her - because it's completely out of the question for our Celestia. =)

Dragon names... well, Spike was named by, presumably, Twilight. Dragons in the wild presumably name themselves, and presumably choose more signified and archaic-sounding names.

^'Eat beauty' makes it sound like they eat the actual concept of beauty. Like how Caboose eats unhappiness.

But Tyrant Celestia IS fanon, isn't she? You said fanon Equestria. That was the point I was trying to make

^Okay, expanded-universe but close to canon Equestria. I consider Tyrant Celestia a 'wouldn't it be cool if'-level WMG rather than serious fanon, but that's my own personal preference and I probably shouldn't delineate sections of fanon based on it.

I tend to take Tyrant Celestia stuff on a case by case basis; it's fine in any particular comic or fanfic, but when people project onto the actual show, it doesn't fit as well.

Yeah. It's fine in fanworks, but I don't see any evidence that it's appropriate in Original Flavor-style fan interpretations of Equestria. Sorry for the confusion, folks.

Speaking of Tyrant-Celestia. I have this WMG for a fic which I want to keep relatively in-character. Do you think it would work:

1000 years ago Celestia discovered an evil soul corrupting essence that can only act if it's willingly accepted into ones heart. She was able to restrain it. At this time Luna was starting to get really bitter about the whole eternal night thing, starting to get somewhat violent about it. Celestia got REALLY worried. So with a heavy heart, she decided to use the essence as a final test of character for Luna. She let the essence go and told it about Luna's desire for night. If Luna accepted it, then she would become truly evil and ok to seal away, if she rejected it, then she would have proven herself a truly good person and Celestia's fears would be significanly lessened.

I think the idea is sound, but it kinda causes a plot hole in that if it's a test of Luna's true nature, it means that she failed and is "bad". Which kinda creates problems when she repents like immediately after she's defeated. Although, you could chalk it up to Character Development and it could work fine.

Okay... I doubt I'm the first to suggest this. Honestly I don't care. I think it needs to be done.

Can we please make a separate page for discussing fanon, and reserve this one for discussing canon?

We did, but the fanfic thread has kinda been delegated to people POSTING their fics and recieving feedback

I'm sure the thread will be more grounded in canon once season two starts airing - but I'm not entirely sure I get what you're suggesting. Anything not explicitly stated by the show is fanon, even if we're discussing what's true for the canonverse - things like Dash's relationship with Gilda, how old the main cast are, that sort of thing. Banning everything except concrete canon from discussion would tamp down the thread considerably.

We already have a fanfic thread, although that's not quite what we're talking about.

@Ginger: That's kinda what the fanfic thread was for; the people who don't read fanfic got sick of seeing it taking up so much space in this thread that we moved it to it's own thing.

The problem with creating a separate thread is that any and all interpretation of canon could be labeled as Fanon; unlike with actual fanfic, there's no hard and fast line. And the show's appeal is really really rooted in the way the audience views it. Trying to separate them would be really problematic. We just need to be more clear on what we're talking about.

Speaking of dragon names, will Spike get a sweet Latin name when he grows up, like Cuspis Equestridraco or something?

^^No announcements yet, sadly. I've heard it's supposed to be sometime this winter, but who knows?

We haven't had any new content for a couple months at this point, so most of what we talk about is going to be fanon. Besides, its so easy to slide between fanon and canon when discussing the show, trying to keep the two to their respective threads would be impossible.

Anyone else hope Pinkie's family will be in season 2?

I'm hoping for a lot of the cast's families to make appearances in season 2. As for Pinkie's, I kind of want them to be completely different from her flashback, just to emphasize the Unreliable Narrator aspect.

I just thought of an interesting idea for a Tyrant Celestia/Trollestia in a Played for Drama style. Whatever caused Luna to become Nightmare Moon is now affecting Celestia, causing her to become a Tyrant with a dark sense of humor. Of course, this would be more like an alternate universe version of the Fi M story, as Celestia is clearly not a Tyrant in the episodes she's seen in. It could make for a good fanfiction though
