Do we even know that hatching a dragon egg is the standard test? There could be a bunch of potential tests that are picked on the basis of difficult but doable for a filly, and Twilight drew the dragon hatching one.

I think the still born idea, and the magic idea, so here are my thoughts.

The inate magic of a dragon has limits, hatching 40 eggs may be in their power but 41? nope.

And unlike unicorns they can't just pass it off to another dragon, their magic is internal, so they give still born eggs, eggs that just need a little more magic (as i recall Twilight wasn't told HOW to hatch the egg either so it has to be something relitivly simple, like exposure) to finish the job.

^^^^That's interesting, but I wouldn't think an explicitly magical creature that can live for hundreds of years would have a set limit of magic. The treaty idea makes more sense in my mind.

^^^That's actually Rarity's crowning moment. She's not physically strong or fast, but she outsmarts the diamond dogs with what she can do, and gets away with a bunch of jewels for it.

if the magic is internal and the birthing is what endows the eggs the hatch i can easily see them running out of steam magically before they are done physically, and once the egg is out what are they going to do shove it back in a few days later to rebirth it?

^That's an interesting take on it. Even if Twilight wasn't expected to hatch the egg, she was making a pretty fizzly show of magic, which could've been what the instructors were unimpressed with.

They WERE already making notes before Twilight even did anything, so there's probably more to it than just cracking the egg

That actually makes a lot more sense. It wouldn't require a lot of eggs, and it would explain why ponies with dragon companions aren't a lot more common. And if nopony expected the egg to hatch, it doesn't make them look like they're being careless with eggs by giving them to fillies to throw magic at. I guess they need a new test though, since Twilight went and hatched their egg.

When I heard that several of the cast members for Death Note were also in MLP my heart almost stopped. XD. It's such a 180 in tone

Just how many are there? Here's what I've got so far:

G4 Pinkie singing = Misa

G4 Spike = Near

G3 Spike = Ryuk

Ace = Light

I have seen some fanworks in which Dragons are ancient beings outside of ponykind and maybe older than them, so that oldest dragons are on a more equal footing with Celestia and Luna.

Heh, the Spike from Generation 3 was over a thousand years old. I like to think that Princess Celestia started the whole little dragon assistant trend a long time ago, and so stuff like the school's dragon egg test was a little tribute to her.

Don't get a substitute. They make bad house pets.

But one dragon egg replacement every few years is at least reasonable.

@Crowfall: I think it's obvious that Twilight was a special case. They needn't have changed their tests just for that.

But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...

I was assuming they only had the one egg, but I guess there's no reason they couldn't have backups.

I wonder if Twilight took care of him for the first couple years, or what? Maybe her parents looked after him for awhile.

About a few pages ago about how Celestia sends back letters. If magical fire is necessary, she could use Philomena, if incapable of doing it herself.

She's a little bit taller than ordinary ponies by about half a head, which is mostly due to her long legs.
