@Mio the problem with Discord is that they set him up as being too smart. It made it VERY noticeable when he grabbed the Idiot Ball.

That is a good point, though may issues with Discord run deeper then that. Essentially I feel like he is a Villain Sue in this case, mostly because of a combination of his implied omnipotence and his willingness to confront his enemies directly from the beginning. Yes, that is the smart thing to do but there are reasons why writers usually do not have characters with that kind of power do that.

Well to me it seemed more subtle with Nightmare Moon. Dunno why though.

But the more you think about it the more you realize how similar seasons one and two's openers are.

Really? Discord directly opposed with the Mane Six from the beginning. Nightmare Moon started just prior to the castle.

Sueness has more to do with how the universe treats a character than how they act. Discord was just being smart at the beggining. Sueness would be if he did something that should have been a mistake on his part yet somehow ended up working in his favour.

I'm much more lenient on Villain Sues (not that I think Discord is a sue) than on main characters (mostly because villains are my favourite characters). I'd rather a villain be omnipotent than a hero

@Badwolfwho Well uh I dunno. I mentioned I just put two and two together. But Nightmare Moon put the the Mane Six in situations opposed to their elements. Discord did the same thing, but was more direct cause he challenged them.

Yeah that's it. Night Mare moon didn't challenge them. It was a race. But she toyed with cause....cause she's evil?

And Discord wan't omnipotent. Omnipotents can't be defeated unless they want to be. He's just an incredibly powerful reality warper.

Perhaps Villain Sue was not the right term. What I didn't like was that I felt that the heroes were put in a situation where Only The Author Can Save Them Now, and Discord's power really reinforces that sentiment. It makes the Mane's Six's eventual triumph feel empty.

As long as the elements existed there's always going to be something stronger thsn him. (and it was implied that he can't destroy the elements when they aren't in use, otherwise he would've done that straight away)

Presumably toyed with them to persuade them to leave. She didn't know they were the bearers of the Elements.

An omnipotent being is just all powerful they can still be tricked. I'd still argue that Discord wasn't omnipotent though.

Or he's Suicidally Overconfident.
