@Flapjackmaka: He never seemed all that different from the other upper class assholes to me. And despite the fact that I usually don't think of anything sexual when watching MLP, the whole time I couldn't shake the idea that he was just flattering Rarity to try and get in her non-existent pants.

I think it's basically because he's the one Canterlot pony who didn't just turn his nose up at the fact that Rarity was from Ponyville. As for trying to get into Rarity's non-pants, he had Fleur hanging all over him; you just know he's tapping that plot. Rarity would be a step down for him.

Someone here posted some idea that Fancy Pants knew Rarity was from Ponyville , and yet introduced here to the high class ponies. There's also the whole liking her simple dress at the end.

I like to imagine he already knew who Rainbow Dash really was, and went along with her fib to get her in with the high-society ponies. I mean, look at how far she went once she got past their wall of weapons-grade snootiness and got a foot in the door. She just needed someone to help her along.

By the way, this upcoming episode; I kinda like how it's actually apparently calling back to the fact that the CMC wanted to get some potions-making lessons from Zecora.

It's also possible he did some research and found out she really did know the princess, and was just being nice to her for the sake of getting closer to royalty. But that's being a bit harsher to his character than I like to be.

The deal with Fancy Pants (is that two words or one word?) is that he displayed none of the shallow snootiness that his compatriots did, and that he was obviously a leader, not a follower. Sure, he could still be a terrible person, but at the very least he is much better at hiding it if he is (which I doubt).
