Could be a Battle in the Centre of the Mind style of thing - it's technically a battle of wills that takes the form of a physical fight, just for the sake of appearances? Not too violent, of course. The issue is how to show that in a open world, as opposed to with random battles... maybe all of the attacks are just mental? brain lasers and the like?

Discord is Star Swirl, Luna is Clover the Clever, and Celestia was whoever Lyra was playing in that quick shot of the Princess Platinum entering the summit and was wearing the same outfit as Twilight in the play.

^Twilight gets far too many letters in "The Return of Harmony" for all the events to have occurred before "Fall Weather Friends" and "Winter Wrap-Up". We're dealing with at least two years of time by that point.

Yeah, I'm of the opinion that the episodes don't take place in any particular order unless they reference each other. This could even include season 2; there's nothing to dictate that Twilight couldn't keep writing letters even after "Lesson Zero", so it's possible (although unlikely) that some season 2 episodes could occur before some season 1 episodes.

I think it basically counts as It's Always Spring because it always looks like it's spring or summer unless it's plot relevant that the season is something else. Which means that while it's technically not spring all the time, it is like 90% of the time, which is enough to qualify.

Regarding episode order.

I tend to assume that all the episodes in a season take place at the same time, and that at the very least the seasons are in chronological order. It probably isn't a safe thing to assume, but for me it is just easier to assume that everything takes place in order then trying to divine an actual order from the events that happen. *shrug*
