I think they just did it to show how much they appreciate their fans, and didn't really have any deeper meaning beyond that.

Jteeth: On the other hand, when there's a cider shortage in the very next episode after The Last Roundup and her friend never gets any, she hoards the stuff. Or two episodes after Party Of One she's pretty much all for Discord being in charge.

There's a monthly fee, but nobody was using the server anyway, so TPTB stopped paying for it.
