@ Charoit, and your missing the point. The point is that the fandom managed to create this whole, well developed Character FROM nothing more then an animation error, and then had this acknowledge by the creators.

That's why Derpy is the un-official fandom mascot, she simultaneously represents the amazing wealth of creativity the show inspires in it's fans, as well as the fact that the creators recognize and appreciate the Periphery Demographic

Newsflash: No one got into this fandom with high expectations. Most people got here either out of some morbid sense of curiosity, or to get a few ironic laughs at a stupid kid's show.

We are not setting the bar here, the creators did that themselves. And bless them for doing so, but there will be pressure from the fandom to keep aiming that high. You can't hide behind "It is just a kid's show" any more after showing just what they are capable of.

Much like with all the new Super Mario or Zelda games: Franchises that have been incredibly successful in the past, and now everyone is expecting that every new instalment is just as good or even better then the previous one. And once the fans feel something isn't right in the preview, there will be a few cries of Ruined Forever, because they have an emotional investment in the show, and people tend to act emotionally once something is happening to their beloved franchise. Most of the time, they will be proven mostly wrong, of course, but you can't fault them for being concerned after hearing something that would raise all kinds of red flags if it were any other series.

Canon is irrelevant.

I don't think I'm missing the point at all. I know they created a "character" from an animation error and that's why I don't think she deserves her fandom. Had she not had said error she probably wouldn't have the fans she has today, unlike other background characters who got their followings on their on merit.

Hahahahaha, I'm picturing that scene from Negima where Nodoka is caught thinking about that as the solution, only Fluttershy's in her role and Rarity's the one who finds out

@ Kayeka, however the shear number of times people have gotten upset of concerned for an episode based just on the preview synopses, only for the synopsis to either by wrong, not intirely accurate, or for it to be right, but done well. You'd think people would stop getting worked up over them and wiat for the actuall episode before making judgements.

I kinda hope that AB has her own "Foal's first alchemy set" in the treehouse, and the "Love Potion" recipe that she has only grants minor infaturation (due to it being low level alchemy)

AB tries to add something to make the mixture more powerful, and accidentally makes it TOO strong.

@ Chariot. So what if it was started by a mistake. Should we not use penicillin because it was discovered after Pasteur goofed and allowed a mold sample he was studying to become contaminated? And I'm assuming you never use sticky notes since the creation of the glue used on them was a mistake and failed attempt at making something completely different...

Point is some of the greatest discoveries came about because someone goofed.

That's different. Dr. Whooves wasn't created by an animation error. His personality and such were derived as a shoutout by fans to another series.

That's different though. Those things you mentioned all brought something of value into the world and could still possibly exist as they are now without being made by mistake. The same can't be said of Derpy.

No it's not. Making a character a shoutout to another based off unintentional similarities is completely different from making an entirely new character from an animation error.
