Maybe cast it as a Ponyville-sponsored LOTR play in Canterlot? It'd have a nice framing event around Twilight being given a book left behind by Megan long ago, a Red Book of Westmarch.

I'm pretty sure that one of the Diamond Dogs is voiced by someone doing a Gollum impression anyway, so. =)
The Crusaders... maybe the kids of Helms Deep? XD You need some little soft characters around to heighten the tension, after all, though that pays them very short shrift.

I don't like the idea of Derpy being Gollum, so she's the new Faramir. We needed a Faramir, anyway.
OR: Derpy is Wormtongue and Snips & Snails are Gollum. That would make the Ursa Minor Shelob.

Well, if they really had nothing to lose, then it becomes less difficult to just vanish one day like that. It's certainly less wasteful than suicide, if they are willing to learn to be independant.
