I do think you had a point about how it also represents her desire to stay with her family, though. I mean, she got it when she decided that she wanted to be with her family on the farm rather than her relatives in Manehattan.

Maybe they're the salesponies in the family. The children run the farm while the parents are out rustling up business. It wouldn't surprise me that much if they keep in contact with Applejack, we've just never seen her getting one of their letters or whatever.
