Honestly I think the bulk of Pinkie's problem is simply that she needs friends. Not friends to be there and to keep her stable, but friends to help her along to being truly stable. Think about it - she went off the deep end because she thought nopony liked her. She probably always knew to some degree that most ponies only liked her for her parties, and that they really never cared about her on any deeper level. So she always played up the zaniness, hoping that it could at least keep them around. She wanted ponies to at least see her, to recognize her, to care about her, and the parties were the only way she knew how.

Then along come the mane cast. They're truly close to her, and want to get to know her. "Great!" she thinks, they really like her! But she keeps playing up the zaniness, because it's all that she understands now. Maybe she still thinks that that's what they like about her. Then suddenly they don't want to be a part of one of her zany antics - her only strategy is failing! What could be wrong? Did they never really like her? Did anypony? the only way she knows how to attract friends has failed her. She already thought that nopony ever really saw her deeply, and now they don't even want the surface Pinkie. So she invents new friends, friends who can be what she always really wanted - friends who won't judge, will see what she really is and stay anyways. Did you notice that for whatever else, Pinkie was remarkable calm while talking to her party guests? Calmer than she's ever been?

Pinkie doesn't need friends who like her on the surface. She doesn't need friends who like her parties, or her zany antics. She needs friends who like her. She needs her friends to see her at her absolute worst, a point where she could never get up on her own, and still be there with her. Only when that happens will she start to understand that she can make really friends, not with zany antics or parties, but by simple being Pinkie. She needs to be shown that ponies can love the real her before she starts to calm down and actually be the real her.

Personally, I think only Pinkie Pie can be actually labeled as clinically insane out of the Mane Six. Rainbow Dash, Twilight, and Fluttershy merely have various insecurities that only reveal themselves when they're put on tremendous amounts of stress similar to a dam breaking, while Rarity and Applejack are the only two relatively SANE ponies in the group.

There is a diffrence between clincaly insane and quirky and odd. Pinkie Pie has never demonstrated a callous diregard for other pepole's feeling or inability to under the nature of her action and their consquences both on others and on herself. Thusly she is completely sane.

I repeate my position about Pinkie Pie from before: she is totattly and utterly ingrained in her own preception of the world. There is nothing wrong with that, it makes her happy, and generaly speaking dosen't cause anyone any harm. It allows her to quirky fun and passionat about everything she dose. It causes conflicts sometimes but it dosen't make her any less of a good friend or a good pony.

@Ginger: you're right, it doesn't give her a free pass to be a jerk, and maybe it is part of her personality - I'm just saying, some people you need to be patient with. People aren't just a thing, they have reasons for being that thing. People have reasons for being jerks, and you never know - they might be good ones. So be patient with them, especially the ones who have real problems. Maybe all they needed was someone who could be patient with them for once.

Don't get me wrong, they can still be dicks, and you can't just let that slide. But it's not unforgivable.

I'm fairly sure that Applejack's big trigger is someone messing with her family.

Hey Syd! A new episode was announced, it involves hooch and some hilariously named antagonists, more UST between Ginger and Pinkie and I took some time out of my day to unnecessarily psychoanalyze her. There was probably more, but I messed it.

The most Pinkie has ever done is be sort of abrasive, and be a bit of a jerk to dash in Po O(wow bad acronym), but again, she had good reason.
