They're not forced to, but the augmentations give the higher ups an edge over the lower ranking guards. It's a peer pressure thing :B

Also, Celestia's magic fuels their augmentations, so they don't need to take any highly addictive drugs! And Celestia's not the type to cut off any of her loyal follower's supply :P

I don't think Celestia would allow something like that to fly. Regardless of the physical advantages it would give some of the guards, there's always going to be some who'll object to it on a moral level. Why would she want to sow the seeds of disharmony amongst her guards by (indirectly) encouraging peer pressure? A team that works in perfect harmony is better than a splintered team in which one half is stronger than the other.

and if their augmentations are fuelled by her, what happens if something happens to the princesses?

I just realized that the crystal pony toys (such as the wave 4 blind bags

) are the exact opposite of the Twinkle Eyed Ponies—the Twinkle Eyed Ponies have gem eyes, while the crystal ponies have gem everything-but-eyes!

I always saw them as more of an honor guard then anything else. After all, if you faced something that could actually threaten the Princess, you're totally screwed. Well, they could be useful in fending off Pinkie Pie during public occasions :p

That's pretty much what I assumed as well. They keep away minor annoyances and serve as escorts rather than actually PROTECTING the Princesses
