Strangely, the only pairing I really like among the girls is AJ/Rarity. I ship Fluttershy with Mac, but I don't really think I have any other optimal pairings for the girls.

I've honestly never cared much for shipping anything, as pushing a character's relationship from "good friends" to "lovers" creates a lot of baggage as far characterization goes. I would much rather work with canon characterizations than fanon ones tweaked enough to create a romantic relationship. Background ponies aren't so much of a problem in my book though, as their characters are almost entirely fanon as it is. I still wouldn't personally ship them, but there is at least justification for doing so.

I'm with you, Lurker. Since you've been here for a while, I assume, you're familiar with my opinion that it would just unbalance the girls' dynamic - not to mention that there's no subtext in the show itself aside from what we jaded, perma-shipping-goggles tropers interpret. I don't think Applejack and Rarity would do well together at all - for one, I peg Rarity as 95% straight at least - but their personalities complement each other quite well, largely because they're intended as foils of each other. It's that complement that makes them fun to ship.

I should also note that I tend to sort my ships into "fun" and "actually likely". Stuff like AJ/Rarity or Twilight/Pinkie are in the former category, which is strictly a "wouldn't it be interesting if this happened?" sort of thing. The only ships that I would seriously back in canon are Lyra/Bon Bon and maybe Fluttermac. Outside of that I have no "serious" pairings.
