I dunno, Nightmare Moon was pretty competent. She knocked out a bunch of royal guards like they were nothing, and at least managed to dodge around Celestia. She was likely just playing around with the mane six. She was too cocky, but not for no reason, either.

@kegi All that stuff isn't actually shown onscreen though (except for the guards). Plus, my personal headcanon is that Celestia didn't intervene ON PURPOSE, as part of her plan to purify Luna.

NM playing around with the mane cast only made her look MORE incompetent, because her obstacles are so quickly overcome that it's laughable, AND she actually ended up FORGING the friendship that would eventually wield the elements against her

yeah... okay, fair enough. I would say that Discord fucked up for the same reason, but he at least had the common decency to win before he started getting cocky. Given what we've seen of Luna alone I can guess that if Nightmare Moon had been serious she would have been dangerously competant, though.

@kegi True, but she DIDN'T. The only reason NM lost was due to her own incompetence. Discord was defeated due to a combination of Celestia outgambiting him, THEN his incompetence. Discord put himself in a position where he won. His obstacles DEFEATED the mane cast.

That's the problem, at no point did it look like NM had the upper hand due to her own actions. The only time hope seemed lost was when the EOH APPARENTLY didn't work, but that had nothing to do with NM herself. She didn't set that up to happen

Yeah, I get that. It makes sense. She's just one of those characters who I want to be cooler than they were, so I just sort of start trying to rationalize their behaviour in a way that makes them better.

we don't really know what all went down before she got......oh my god, oh my freaking .....ok just thought of, ok I know this is a BIG stretch, but it is freaking hilariously awesome, NMM got sent to the moon by a sun god, and whose the most well know diety attributed to the sun, Apollo. Think about it. yes random but it JUST popped into my head as I was writing.

That's true what I mean is that Luna struggled to win and Celestia stopped her relatively quickly before she made any lasting damage...while Discord had already won and had been reigning for years and torturing ponies for a lot of time...

Because of my headcanon that even if NM were defeated, the moon wouldn't lower itself unless she willed it to (or she died or was imprisoned by the elements) I imagine most of NM's more awesome moments happened in the past.

After a long, grueling duel between the two sisters, Celestia finally stops going easy on Luna and defeats her. She picks up the battered body of Nightmare Moon, then realizes that the moon isn't going down. Cue insanely evil laughter from Luna as Celestia slowly realizes that defeating her sister is meaningless.
