It's still up in the air, I think, that or I'm too old to keep up anymore.

First, the Mane Six have a mandate from Celestia to study firendship and report back their findings to Her.

Why?

Second, teh Other Six have a mandate from Luna to right wrongs and report back ther findings of [some sort of noble concept] to her.

We know why - so She can get over her guilt of being Nigtmare Moon, adn haveing fallen into that snare long ago. She wants to study [some sort of noble concept] so that She won't fail again.

Or something.

Something that's been bothering me since the premire is that the supposed reason Luna went Super Powered Evil Side in the first place was that the ponies all wanted to play during the day when her sister was in power and never at night when she was in power.

Would it be that they Foils favor playing at night, hence why Luna is fond of them?

YES.

They all have some sort of night-appeal. Be it that that's when they work best, or they're fond of star-gazing, or something. A common element that makes Her select them.

I like this. More Luna makes me most pleased.

Now, we need to nail down WHY Luna is doing all this, and nail it to the wall real good. Without a clear mandate, this'll be aimless.

@Pvtnum: She wants to make up for her actions as Nightmare Moon by organizing a team to help society. She can't really help out directly because she has other duties, but she does have the time to put the group together.

Maybe they all see some night-time event (shooting star, something) and it pulls them together. They didn't know one another except tangentially before that.

Night affinities.

Twilight Foil: Pretty much everyone in Canterlot seems to Stargaze. Celestia probably set it up like that.

Big Rig: As a hauler it's likely he'll have to work long hours through the night to get deliver cargo.

Pig Iron: Is inspired by the night sky in his crafting.

Check Up: Works the night shift since less of the other hospital staff are around.

Smoke Screen: I got nothing. Edit: I guess he can be the vampire

Chuckles: Refines his craft at underground midnight street shows.

We need an "[x] is magic" theme. Something that grabs you.

Sacrifice? Selfless Service? Guardian? Drawing a blank, here.

Maybe that, yeah. Luna let things go to Her head, and was left without a duty for Her exile. Maybe She's hungering for a royal duty to perform, and dreams this scheme up to cope.

What about a repate of that event drawing them together again...like "hey it's that thing that gave me my cuite mark oh wait you too? Cool!"

It needs to be something broad, but it also needs something that fits with the theme (Luna bringing them together to make up for her past deeds) so prefably it should have something to do with her past mistakes?
