@Ace, maybe that's the EP's big claim to fame. Not any active power, but aura's - a skilled EP 'mage' can manipulate their aura for different effects, like a Paladin.

Maybe if enough hatred is accumulated? Also, yeah. They're named Windigos, but in the original mythology, Windigos were human-like cannibal monsters.

They were empowered by that which Discord craved, and that Synergy which would later be used to forge the Elements of Harmony is their polar opposite and lethal to them. Unfortunately, they never went extinct.

Was anyone else thinking that when Twilight cast Kingdom Hearts on the Windigos, she had just discovered the Elements of Harmony?

I always thought that Wendigos took residence in the body of a person. So, not really a human like monster but a spirit.

I'm pretty sure that Applejack growing a shoot instantly from some dirt was staged. It was a play after all.

The way I approach whatever backstory is happening here is that it's prehistorical myth. So there are no actual records but like any good old oral history it's retold over and over with changes here and there. Maybe Star Swirl was inserted there somewhere because he was famous. Who's to say they didn't get rid of the Wendigos after that, after re-gaining strength?

Although if the threat of Wendigos persist then you can argue that they are the selection that causes the ponies to evolve, in the Darwinistic sense of the word, to value friendship above anything else. And not knowing what hatred is.

Actually, yeah, I just thought of something. Clover the Clever was Starswirls apprentice, right? But this is 'long before Luna and Celestia'... Luna knew Starswirl, didn't she?

You know it's good thing the Power of Friendship is so infectious, because I was seriously wondering what they were going to do when their leaders thawed.

But that was a flashback, we didn't see them do that on stage

@Badwolf: Thing is, it's pretty clear when they switch between the history and the actual play though; I think the shoot growing was as much staged as the the blizzard freezing everypony.

I'm really not sure what to think of this episodes. I enjoyed it a lot, but I'm kinda sad that I didn't get more of the ponies acting like themselves rather than acting like the historical ponies. I mean, it might just be because the show is experimenting more with storytelling, which is good. I don't know.

Could be that there are a lot of Starswirls.

I'm just saying that that was my interpretation. The Flashbacks with Pansy had her acting exactly like Fluttershy, same with Pinkie and Pudding.

Time!

Discord was probably able to conquer Equestria easily by Corrupting the leaders and breaking Equestria up in civil war. 6 young ponies, two of them sisters, were able to forge what would later be named the Elements of Harmony in secret, aided by the Legendary Star Swirl the Bearded. Unfortunately they were nearly too late, and four of them tried to buy time by distracting Discord. With great sorrow, the two remaining ponies, who were sisters, consigned Discord and their four Best Friends to stone. Unfortunately, something Discord said left a deep mark on the younger sister, which would later go on to fester into a Nightmare...

Also, think about it. AJ's orchard if full of Apples ALL YEAR ROUND. I'd say it's pretty resonable to assume that she can grow stuff that quickly

You sure? I don't think we've seen the orchard in winter, at least.

Maybe Starswirl wasn't actually there for these events, but was mentioned in the play just because he's the archetypal powerful unicorn. Like shoehorning Merlin into a story.

And did Luna say she knew him personally, or just that she knew of him? She apparently knew what his bells looked like, but his robes could have been saved.

Actually, I'm pretty sure they can't grow things easily in winter. That's shown as much through this episode and Winter Wrap-up.
