As far as I'm concerned, happy endings in a universe where nothing really threatens said happy ending mean less than any happiness won from the jaws of darkness. I love the girls, for instance, but I wouldn't rate their surviving to the end of the show as one of the happier stories in fiction (I mean, obviously it's a good thing), simply because FiM isn't remotely the sort of show where anything else could happen (and there's nothing wrong with that). However, every time, for instance, Cain refers to the post-retirement career of another member of the 597th, I get happy - because, being a fan of military science fiction, I know there's generally a good chance that they shouldn't have made it to retirement. Especially not in 40k.

As I've said, I'm a HUGE fan of Earn Your Happy Ending. People coming back from the brink of absolute insanity/destruction is always awesome.

...but!

When something is so opressively dark, I honestly can't find myself caring about anything that happens. It's why I stopped watching Family Guy. I just CAN'T feel satisfied that ONE person managed to survive something that they should've died in, especially if he's still living in a Crapsack World at the end of it.

Family Guy no longer has my interest...it's just...urrgghh

So, I got to sleep for six measley hours, and I'm greeted by four pages of hormones.

My Horse fic is now fit for deletion. I had an epiphany about it last night, thinking about this Equestrian History play thing.

I will have to revise my Horse history, along with a suitable backstory for Donkeys. Something that makes them undesirable. Which means my "Horse + Alicorn = lots of ponies" concept is a lot of rubbish now.

Perhaps Earth Ponies are descendents of Horses from way back, but Horses continued their existance outside Equestria, especially after it got all fixed and stuff. Donkeys came from a similiar region, and every so often, a Mule/Hinny wanders into Equestria. Horses may avoid the place as it's too civilized.

Basically, Horses are akin to barbarians. War-like, primitive, agressive.

Or so Ponies are told.

Could be, Horses tried to live inside Equestria priro to the unification of pony-kind, bbut foudn the conditions to be oppressive and they got even a worse deal than Earth Ponies did, as Horses don't even have the innate magic that PE's have to help harness the land. Could be that Horses were merely used as animals by pony-kind. Less intelligent, more animalistic, they were essentially domesticated.

And then they left. Revolted, perhaps?

Horse-kind - three basic types (keeping with the theme of three that exists in MLP: Draft Horses, Thoroughbreds, and Hanoverians. (although I might change the names.)

Note - hands and "Apples" are used interchangeably, given that apples average 4 inches in diameter.

Drafts are mild-tempered gentle giants and well-suited for working and pulling. They're analogous to Earth Ponies. they range from 16 to 20 hands tall (at the withers).

Thoroughbreds are agressive, spirited, bold, fast and agile. They're also the lightest of the three. Analogous to Pegasi. They average 14-16 hands tall (at the withers).

Hanoverians are a mix of the above. They're militant, intelligent, curious, graceful, athletic and of a more even-temperment that the Thoroughbreds, but with greater agility than a Draft. A jack-of-all-trades Horse. Most average 16 hands tall (at the withers). Hanoverians almost invariably are found in leadership roles over the other horse-kind, making them roughly analogous to Unicorns.

Actually, my favorite is either Pinkie (batshit, loves snacks; I can dig), or Twilight (has a library, likes learning; again, I dig). Applejack's nice, too (takes you for what you are; doesn't care about anything else). Fluttershy is too obvious, Rarity wouldn't want to be seen with me (or really anyone else), and Dash wouldn't think I was cool enough to hang around with.

My favorite background character is Granny Smith: even her own family is unsure how old she is, but she keeps trucking along.

I have to admit, Twilight does it for me too. She's so adorkabe its just HHNNNGGGGHHH!
