Wanting something someone else has isn't that bad, its not perfect, but if you don't act on your greed, you should be fine. Like I said, While rarity probably wanted the gem, I don't think her intention was for spike to give it to her.
EDIT: Also, Is the forum screwed up for anyone else? for some reason everything looks odd, and refreshing isn't fixing it.
EDIT 2: Oh, I just fixed it after edit 1. Lol.
Forum looks fine to me. Maybe it's just something on your end?

Perhaps I'm just too unwilling to see bad in people. Or ponys. I still don't think see wanted spike to give it to her, so much as that she didn't want it to be eaten.
EDIT: Saying that though, Pinkie pie clearly has a big mean streak. Whenever she isn't giddy, she seems to always be pissed off at something.

And while I agree with the desire for it to not being eaten (It deserves to be put in a museum to be honest) but it was Spike's hard work and own birthday gift he's been caring for and molding forever for that moment and she practically swoops in and plucks it out of his hands while he's in a lovesick stupor.
I think Pinkie just doesn't feel in moderation, when she feels she FEELS.

She shouldn't have even MENTIONED it. It was HIS Gem. That HE grew, over MONTHS, for the express purpose of having a delicious birthday dinner. No one else had the right to request it from him.

She does appear to love the little guy in return, if the fall shows anything:
Can think outside the box, inside the chimney and would really like a Tylenol, thanks.

@Mio No! I do NOT assume the worst. I LOVE these characters, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't paint me as someone who's always trying to make them seem evil.
Ok, I exaggerated to much in my statement, I'm sorry. I just get kind of surly when it comes to Alternate Character Interpretation in this show.
And hypocritically enough I've done the exact same thing I accused you of doing in other episodes. So yeah, sorry.

I just can't use "no harm, no foul" as an excuse here. Yes, he appreciated the kiss, but my issue is with the fact that she even THOUGHT about wanting to take the gem in the first place. It's just... wrong.

Pinkie is very mood-swingish, yeah. I take it to be a byproduct of her Rock Farm days, when even her neutral state was a kind of greyish gloom (at least to her).
Imagine what a more gentle smile from her would be like since we already know her grins.
Anyways Rarity's the sort who would find a proper way to return the favor later. I expect her to either teach him something useful or make something nice in return.
I am beginning to feel that we're all starting to repeat ourselves at this point.

Implying Rock Farm is a thing that actually happened.

I like Pinkie when she's being warm. It's her Explosiveness that I don't like, but when she's more repressed, she's great
or when she's angry. I don't mind her OTT ness there

She actually did not know that he had been "aging" it for months. From her point of view Spike just got a hold of this super rare and valuable gem and he was just going to eat it.
I really don't think that desiring things is really such a terrible thing. Whether or not you think she acted on those desires is something else entirely.

I guess since Ponyville is so small, everyone just knows each other to some extent
It could just be Spike that's really good at learning names. It probably comes with the "research assistant" thing, that he needs to be able to set up appointments for Twilight Sparkle quickly and easily.
Or he secretly wants to be like Pinkie Pie, and one step to that is to "know every pony in Ponyville." But Spike's biggest hurdle will be getting a weirder sense of humor.

@Mio Wanting to take someone's birthday gifts (even if you plan on paying them back later) is a very personal case of What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous? to me.
and from my POV, she DID act upon those desires.

What'd she need the gem for anyway? A dress for someone else?
and from my POV, she DID act upon those desires.
