My guess is they just crushed up a few sapphires and experimented with how tossing them into the batter and frosting would affect the quality of the cupcake.

It probably happens offscreen, but this is the only time it's relevant to the plot.

It's not like Spike is a kid.

All the ponies are young adults, and Spike is just several years younger than the mane cast. I would say he's a teenager, basically. And he loves Rarity.

Not sure if they add powdered gemstones into the frosting mix, but I assume it's a trivial matter to sprinkle gemstone fragments on top like they were candy sprinkles, assuming you already have them in that form.

Yeah, at this point in the timeline Spike is a bit young for shipping with the mane cast. If I had to guess I'd put him at around 13 or 14 while the mane cast are all in their early twenties.

I liked the new episode. It didn't really raise many deep thoughts in me, just... I liked it.

To be honest, Spike's transformations looked kind of ugly, but making them more "realistic" (as far as you can use that term about dragons) would have been too scary for the target audience.

Because it is just so much better and delightfully fun to watch Rarity friendzone spike and abuse his unrequited love indefinitely. It is right, and anything else is wrong.
