Applejack is the one true pony and everyone else is just a copy.
Concerning the whole romance thing: I think the show theoretically could do it well, but honestly I'd rather it not, if only because romance plots simply don't interest me. While what Fallen Legend said about friendship and romance not being mutually exclusive is certainly true, I also think that the show quite obviously places an emphasis on the friendship side of the equation, and introducing romance as a constant element in the show would distract from that. The show is primarily about Friendship; it's right there in the title, and if there is romance it's almost certainly going to either be a temporary thing, or something involving a secondary character. I could see a recurring romantic subplot involving, say, Big Mac, but a romantic subplot in the mane cast would unbalance the dynamics in the cast. The only way it wouldn't is if the romance is half-assed, which is obviously a bad thing.
Trixie gets married to a hammy pony. They have 500000000000 hammy pony children. The end.
CUTIE MARK CRUSADER MATCHMAKERS!
They could serenade them with a crappy song, played on a homemade guitar.
Oh god Crusaders Matchmakers.
"Ah just know y'all are
perfect fer each oth'r!"
"Psst! Tell her you really like her mane."
"
Ew, what is
wrong with you two? Why are we
doing this?!"

Yeah, I can see Scootaloo hating it. Then trying to go along without vomiting because she does want a cutie mark. Rarity/Mac makes sense since they're siblings with some of the crusaders.
^Well, they are after "The Cutie Pox". There's no telling when a matchmaking episode would be set, though.
Also, yes, Fluttermac for maximum awkwardness.

Maybe they can try to convince her it would be fun. Then Scootaloo can have a homemade elastic-on-a-shoebox guitar solo singing "Love is Dumb".
