I'm just sick of Nice Guys whining over "Friend Zone". It's like their entitled to women's affections just 'cause they say they are nice (hiiiiighly subjective. See the craigslist thing.). Besides, since when is being friends with someone bad?

Alternatively, it could be the other way round.

Male arrives in Ponyville, meets the mane 6 member...they click, hang around doing stuff...mane cast member develops feelings...but then the visitor has to leave, so they just decide to remain friends.

Or even better, neither pony says anything...but it's abundantly clear that they 'like' each other...and the episode can teach how to deal with short and temporary friendships...or something.

Not the place to dump real life stuff here. I have decades of it, but won't go there. For one, I'm long over it. Two, ponies deerve better.

I'm sure there are gentlecolts out there that can deal with it. They harbor feelings for one of the Mane Six, but choose on their own not to act on it for whatever reasons. Basically, benign Unresolved Romantic Tension.

But the point still stands, that any sort of romantic angle in the show would have to be very carefully done, or not at all. We don't want Strangled by the Red String, we don't want UST, and we certainly don't want to send a bad message to kids. Right?

Applelight's idea of neither pony expressing their feelings works, too. Actually, I think that's the best idea yet.

Hard to have a proper romance if they don't cross the Neutral Zone, right? It's all just a bunch of unrequited feelings on both sides of the border. Nothing actually happens.

And we get lots of fanfic material to boot. Win?
