I heard the term was introduced sometime in the middle of Generation 3, but no, I don't think they were ever explained until Friendship Is Magic. Actually the new cartoon's theory of cutie marks makes a lot of old My Little Pony toys look strange in hindsight, like how every baby pony already had cutie marks except for a couple of early Gen 1 ones, so has Generation 4 turned everyone into really late bloomers?

I also imagine a lot of fans were annoyed that the "Twice As Fancy" concept is considered nothing more than a disease now in the cartoon's continuity. I mean, they already released a few holiday G4s with extra cutie marks, like Fluttershy with flowers down her leg, and Pinkie Pie with that 3D heart thing, so what was going on with them?

"I'll explain it to you, dear. They are made... well... somewhere. I imagine it's not here."

Maybe those extra marks are just painted on as decoration?

Lol, they're not satisfied with just the one natural mark, so they go in for tattooing? I could see that.

^Bodypaint might be a popular thing in Equestria, actually, especially for ponies with abstract cutie marks that can be extrapolated into fancy designs. I could definitely see Rarity using paint to supplement one of her dress designs for a one-night event.

Just read Forever. It was awesome.

As I've previously said Cautiously Optimistic. I like Spike and his other episode wasn't bad but it was extremely forgettable.

And flames to make her go faster.

Also, Appledash. Honestly I ship Rainbow Dash with everypony.
