Male ponies tend to have obviously different snouts.

Otherwise, pheromones, build and stature, females are the dominant gender, or they flipped a coin and it came up "girl."

Well, mares and stallions do have different body shapes in the show. It might not be so clear at first glance, but the general differences are that mares are slimmer and rounder while stallions are "angled" looking. Or something.

Don't forget we already saw this side of Rainbow Dash in Best Night Ever. It seems RD really can't handle being ignored, so she goes off searching for a problem to solve to get her some recognition again. It's like she's addicted to heroism sometimes.

Yeah, Best Night Ever had her showing off to impress the Wonderbolts. Then you look at Sonic Rainboom and realize how tightly her self-esteem is bound to her reputation. Even the possibility of failure pretty much caused a nervous breakdown.

Moe: Thanks. I've seen that done a bunch already, but I'll try to figure out a spin to put on it.

Well, she seemed to be okay after Rainbooming as a filly and then failing repeatedly in practice as an adult. It's only when the competition came into play and she had to bank on the Rainboom that she started falling apart. And honestly, with good reason: she knew she couldn't do the Rainboom under normal conditions.

It's admittedly hard to get on first reading without the author's notes. I needed to read them before I understood. (I think it's partially because I've never felt that way.) Basically, RD thinks that she's achieved everything she's capable of and the only direction now is down, which depresses her. Then she decides that she won't accept that and tries something new, realising that she still has more to work towards.
