Of course not! Just frequently overshadowed. Actually, that's a lot of Rarity's problem too, except that she overshadows herself with her own drama. The real characterization just gets buried.

My headcanon is that Spike doesn't have biological parents. His egg was created magically by Celestia as a test for Twilight. She sensed potential in her.

My headcanon is that that test is given to all who take the exam, but they are expected to fail it and doing so doesn’t cause you to fail the entrance exam. If they actually pass, Celestia is alerted and she accepts the unicorn in question as her personal student.
