Getting off Esquestria Girls for a moment, I'm gonna watch Hearth's Warming Eve in a bit. It's another episode done by Merriwether Williams, (Sigh) Thankfully I'm in save hands in terms of episodes for now anyway. It's a Christmas esque episode so I won't expect much from it and luckily it won't be an episode where it'll come to the point where I'm raging at it.

If anything, the comics have gotten lighter over time. I mean, it started with Chrysalis committing genocide and killing a kitty in front of fillies for the lulz while vicious predators eviscerate each other offscreen, then toned down to Lunangst, and the current arc is "Big Mac wants to buy some nails for housework; weird shit happens (and he forgot to turn off his swag)".

I mean if we were to blindly extrapolate,

it'll be 20 pages of wall-to-wall rainbows by December.

That's not even counting the micros, most of which are 100% fluff (albeit (mostly) good fluff).

Hearth's Warming Eve is one of my favorite episodes (portrayal of historical figures is hilarious and brilliant).

And you know what, so is Merriwether Williams as one of my favorite writers. I enjoy her addition to MLPFIM, similar in style to Adventure Time.

Because he know I'm going to go out in this plane and I'm going to remove one of His creations from His universe.

While that may be true, this is the comic book industry. Darkness creep is just the name of the game (unless your Archie, then your just stagnant).Give it a few years and we'll civil wars for democracy in Equestria, Rarity turning evil every other month, and Scootaloo will probably die off-panel in an event comic where ponyville is destroyed so Rainbow Dash can become an insane drug addict in the next storyline.

Twilight gets vaporized on a regular basis and repeatedly reincarnates as an insane eldritch incarnation of life and passion trying to judge all of creation. So much alternate universe fuckery you don't even know what the hell's going on anymore. Rainbow Dash trades her boyfriend to a crossdressing demon crab to temporarily bring back a deceased grandparent just so they can inevitably die again in a few years. Zombie apocalypse.

My guess is that the comic will kinda cycle in terms of darkness; it'll screw darker and more dramatic, and then before it goes totally overboard it'll snap back to Slice of Life before creeping towards drama again.

They have the room to do more complex arcs, and have shown a propensity to alternately use it and relax. With some hiccups (Fluttershy micro) in all seriousness I trust them to keep making a good story — to be completely honest, more than the main studio after S3 and EQG.

The Dash micro was basically an E-rated Marvel story. And besides that, both artists have plenty of experience with DC and Marvel.

The only comic I've had concerns about was Rainbow's, due to the over the top nature of everything. But I still enjoyed it...a rainboom and a double rainboom after all.

@Pykerte: As questionable as some of the creative decisions the show's staff have made, I would still take them over the comic's team.

@Meta Four: A lot of writers do work all over the industry. All we need now is for Grant Morrison to get bored with the DCU and then the ride can truly begin.

Well I've finished Hearth's Warming Eve and while it is a pretty good episode having funny moments from Chancellor Puddinghead/Pinkie Pie and it's interesting to learn about Esquestria's past before Celestia and Luna came along it hasn't really got a lot going on for me in this episode. There's no moral conflicts going on or anything it's just the Mane Six acting in a play. Can't really say much for this episode it was about Esquestria's past and that's about it.
