Brotherhood. The pacing is more in-line with what is to be expected of the series, and the plot (for the most part) is thought out very well.

Reading the manga.

Or watching Brotherhood.

Or watching the first anime, then Brotherhood.

Just make sure you get Brotherhood or the manga in there somewhere. The story gets going to some great places.

It sounds like the opposite of Death Note, where I've heard that the manga has massive pacing issues towards the end.
