Well, for an on topic discussion, instead of somewhat creepy magic bus humanizations, you know the bat ponies? Faust tweeted that she believes that they are their own race.

A guy on reddit dug up a bit of obscure Greek mythology on this. You know that pegasi are based on, well, Pegasus? Bat ponies may be based on a mythological race called Pyrippus, a type of horse with leathery wings. apparently, they pulled the chariot of Hades. It might be coincidental, especially seeing how obscure this race is (I can find hardly anything on them), but it's cool nonetheless.

Stepped down after s1 ended. But s2 was long into production. Normal shows are not like South Park, each episode take time to be made.

Yeah, unfortunately she's also said that due to not working on the show any longer, the remaining writers could do whatever they want with it.

The short version is that while it's an interesting theory there's very little in the way of support either way. Occam's Razor suggest that it was just illusion magic due to the fact that they only appeared in one episode, where Luna constantly used magic to make herself terrifying, but Rule Of Cool demands that they be a subrace of some sort.

@J Teeth: That doesn't really make sense because Luna, at least initially, wasn't trying to be scary. Though I suppose it could be chalked to her just doing what she usually does and not realizing it's so scary.

As a royalty, she really should have at least rehearsed her entrance, asking Celestia what is acceptable mode of presentation, et cetera, especially if she was out of touch for a millennia. I know that she isn't stupid; she should have had some presence in mind that things might not exactly be the same as before.
