I had a pony-related epiphany in the shower today. Celestia and Luna are alicorns because they represent all 3 races they rule over. So what if Discord leads a United States type deal? A bunch of small places banded together. Or, since he ruled Equestria before Celestia and Luna, he represents all of the sentient things that live there.

EDIT: Finally, a pagetopper that's not a reply to something.

^I doubt there was anything as orderly as a country during the Chaos Times. And Discord doesn't really seem to care about ruling; he just wants to be king, without any of the actual legislative stuff that an actual ruler (like Celestia) would have to deal with.

Discord created Celestia and Luna out of the parts of several different ponies and gave them life through the magic of electricity. They then turned on their master and creator, overthrowing and imprisoning him until the end of time, or until somepony got in a fight in front of the statue, whichever came first.
