Well if it happened after I left for work, I wouldn't be able to see it until I got home in the evening.

Anyway, did they ever figure out what the deal with Unicon was? Was it an intentional scam, mistake, or what?

@Kix: A small electrical fire, and no, that was Bronycon.

Short story: Unicon ran out of money, attendees and special guests were being kicked out of the hotel, with the organizers nowhere to be found, and a bunch of guys had to pool their resources to reimburse people as best they could.

It does seem like a lot of trouble to go to if it really was just a scam. But I do remember hearing rumors back when it happened.

I'm pretty sure it was just really bad planning. They severely underestimated the cost or something and ended up not being able to pay the hotels. Then when the pressure was on the organizers basically self-destructed.
