They exist. . .sort of. Really they are primarily used to move freight. Passenger Trains are not really something that will reliably allow you to get anywhere.

One advantage of smaller places like Singapore and Japan: the trainlines are actually pretty good.

I mean, sure I complain about the slow trains just after peak hour and little things like that but at least the MRT lines give damn good coverage of all the "public" areas of the island and are fairly regular. Also our trains aren't as jampacked as Tokyo's subway or the Chinese/Indian railways

Our state actually voted for the construction of highspeed railway that would connect the major cities in the state, but the state government has dragged it's feet for over a decade on the issue and hasn't even gotten around to building a sixth of it. It's pretty clear that they don't want to do it and they have essentially defied the will of the people by not funding it because. . .socialism I guess.

Yeah, trains aren't very reliable unless you're travelling between two major population centers, and even then they can be pretty expensive. Getting a decent train (if you're lucky enough to find one) can cost just as much as flying.

SMRT does a decent job of keeping the trains reasonably affordable around here, although we need to add newer trains and rotate the older ones out faster.

I can only imagine them making a unicorn-powered "bullet" train on the Friendship Express line one day.

Yeah, I'm honestly not quite sure why there aren't really any major passenger trains here in the States, especially considering how they used to be a fairly major element of mass transport here. Perhaps it's because most people seem perfectly fine using planes and cars.

@Irish: It's mostly because in America it's basically assumed that you'll have access to a car; if it's too far to drive, you fly. The only trains that really get used much are either freight trains or subways.
