I don't listen to much folk or bluegrass, but I really love the fact it's telling a story in a semi-poetic way. I've always loved stories, I seriously love Tolkien. As for me, I like lots of genres, Rock n' Roll, trad irish music and recently some metal, like Tool and Iron Maiden. I love Maiden for the fact some of their songs are about history-litterature. As for Tool, I love the openness of their lyrics, really gives me something to think about and ponder. There is some good rap, but the stuff on the radio can go die in a fire for all I care. Professor Elemental is pretty funny and rap that sings about stuff other than the usual

By folk, do you mean just American folk, or folk from anywhere?

For American folk, I like:
  • Gileah: The Golden Planes (her later albums were less folky and more pop-rock)
  • Sufjan Stevens: Seven Swans. Or, for completely bonkers folk fused with progressive rock and featuring every instrument under the sun, check out the album Michigan.
  • Havalina Rail Co.: Havalina Rail Co. (The album America also has a bunch of folk songs, sandwiched in between songs from every other American genre, ever. America is super out of print but I could send you a digital copy if you're interested.)
  • Doug Burr: On Promenade.
  • 16 Horsepower: Folklore (I love pretty much everything 16HP and their spiritual successor Woven Hand have done, but Folklore is the closest they've come to doing a normal folk album.)

Smithsonian Folkways also has an extensive collection of folk music recordings. Browse their website and you're sure to find some interesting stuff.

I don't listen to much bluegrass, but Alison Krauss And Union Station is pretty much the most famous band and they're pretty good. (Alison Krauss also recorded an album with Robert Plant called Raising Sand. It was sorta-folk, sorta-rock, it was produced by T Bone Burnett, and holy balls is it amazing.) Getting more obscure, I saw Dehlia Low play live once and they were really good.

You should also look up the soundtrack from O Brother Where Art Thou. It had a bunch of great songs and great musicians, and it's probably the main reason for the current popularity of bluegrass.

Some stuff I remembered since then: Josh Turner is a mainstream country musician, but he's definitely got more of a bluegrass influence than any other mainstream country artist I know of. There's also Bela Fleck, Dave Grisman, and The Absynth Quintet, who play various flavors of bluegrass-jazz fusion.
And, since today is apparently National Jump To Conclusions Day...

I've heard good stuff about 16, but I'm wondering if they might be too Christian for my taste. I'll have to check those out, thanks Meta.

VG music is neat. A little over a week ago I was singing in a concert where they were playing Final Fantasy music.

Mostly my musical tastes are in the realms of classical and musical theatre. Never been one for "bands."
Fanfiction I hate.

I tend to take things on a track-by-track basis. There's pretty much no genre I won't listen to as long as I find the song good. That said, given that I grew up playing a lot of video games, my library is heavily biased toward it. Grand orchestral pieces are pretty much my go-to music.

Could someone tell me where to get screenshots from the episodes? I'd love to contribute to the tumblr, but I have no clue where to get the images or what to do with them once I do.

I mostly get my VG music from games I've already played. The only exception being Legend of Mana, where it was the OST that got me curious to try out the game.

For me it's a mixture of music from games I've actually played and random music I listen to on the internet and like.

I do enjoy classical and VGM. Particularly unique early systems with their own soundchips like the x-86000, Snes, Genesis, and Turbo.

The most recent music I got was from To The Moon.

I would just like to say that the Mass Effect games have a pretty badass sound-track. All of the legend of Zelda OST's are pretty great, especially some of the ones remastered and done with a full orchestra. I dunno, I try to be open-minded about music, but I find myself getting into binges of certain artists, like Iron Maiden or Tool or Ayreon and I listen to them nonstop for a long time then I move on to other things. My entire Middle-school experience could be recounted in the Beatles albums I aquired and listened to:P

I think my favorite Zelda music is mostly from Wind Waker. But the Tal Tal Heights remix is nice too.

Well, seeing as this forum topic is for "live reactions": Episode 13 of season one: fall friends: muahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Rainbow is going to take this to insane levels. Iron pony compitition, I didn't expect that:P

Twilight sparkle sounds waaaay too happy when saying "go!" for these compititions. considering the seriousness they are both taking this too, at least, on Rainbow's end.

Thank you dark.

I think this got mostly lost yesterday so I thought I'd just repost it (semi-NSFW). I'm pretty happy with it but just wondering about the hips and thighs. I got a suggestion to shrink them a bit and add more to the bust. Any thoughts?

Hartman Hips are a pretty common staple of cartoons, so I don't think there's anything wrong with what you've done. It depends. Would Rarity care about having a fat butt? tongue
