There are, they do not infest humans. It's a parasite common in dogs and that can easily infest most other domesticated animals. human infestation is possible but very very VERY rare. They do not actually infest the heart until the very highest stages of infestation, but rather sit in major blood vessels inside the lungs. are very easily treated and killed by common anti-parasitic medicine.

anyone whose ever heard of someone taking there pet to the vet to be de-wormed, heart worms are the major thing there going to get them treated against, as well as possibly round worms and tape worms. Pretty much any vet will give a dog or cat de-worming medicine the first time they see them regardless of if they think they have them or not just to play it safe.
Now in Equestria, heart worms are pink colored earthworms that are <3 shaped instead of cylindrical.

Short answer: Yes.
Everything fades eventually. At the very least, the fanbase has to peak at some point, before it starts to dwindle down. At best, a couple years after the show ends, you may be left with just a small handful of loyal fans of "that old obscure cartoon about talking horses".
But apart, all we are is just a pile of mush and some crumbly dry mess...
It'll slow down, but I doubt it'll die completely any time soon. And even if it does, it's not going to be obscure, at least not on the internet.
